Located in Carmel, California on a rainy day (which the city doesn’t get many rainy days). Carmel is known for its infamous former mayor, Clint Eastwood, and of course a colony for artists and art galleries. The view of this painting is looking east along Carmel’s main street, Ocean Avenue, at the corner of Lincoln Street. Nanette is featured riding on her bicycle with a basket of French bread. Thom’s passion for antique cars is evident throughout this painting and the entire Carmel series. Thom’s eldest daughter Merritt’s name is on a sign on the left-hand side of the painting. The name of the historical hotel on the left is the Pine Inn. Thom said, “Carmel has been a favorite family retreat for many years.” The couple who originally commissioned Thom to paint this work is featured in the lower left-hand corner of the painting, near the Pine Inn. They are featured with their family.
